Joel LikeCatcher volunteered his time to give the kids and teachers “The FPV Experience” at his booth.
The Air Expo was a FREE family fun day at the Airport on April 21th. Miami is an international hub for aviation. The South Florida Air Expo showcases all of the businesses and exciting opportunities flying into and out of our area everyday. Visitors came to see the planes, simulators, and displays. Briefings are conducted by pilots, aviation enthusiasts, air traffic controllers, flight schools, technicians and other members of the aviation industry.
The expo, the camps and the academies are all part of a SAFEE’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) outreach programs coordinated by the FAA, Miami-Dade and Broward Schools, colleges, universities and local aviation and aerospace industries and organizations. SAFEE’s goal is to introduce as many youth, young adults, and members of our community to the huge impact that aviation has in South Florida.
I decided to make an oldschool quadcopter using the Hellbender 204 V2 frame by Ready Made RC (RMRC). My plan was to use a mix of old favorite parts on this old “dead cat” frame with the newest DSHOT tech. Well planned 3-hour quadcopter build didn’t go seo well. Multiple part failures on the bench. Unbelievable! This what happens when you are working with older parts mixed with newer tech I guess. But it kinda goes both ways too. Enjoy the video below for the full story…
The flight controller’s serial USB connected fine to my computer, and I began programming in BetaFlight. Then it just locked out and never came back . This is a brand new/unused MotoLab Cyclone flight controller. So I had to order a Lumenier LUX V2 to replace it.
I received four 30 Amp DSHOT ESC’s in my Done Drop Box and decided to use them. They failed to program. BLHeli Configurator (both 64bit and 32bit) failed to connect to them. All I could get was power on tones. It was like they had no pre-installed firmware. So I had to order four DYS XSD 30A V2 BLHeli-S ESC’s to replace them.
Not really a failure as much as an inconvenience. The blue standoffs supplied with the Hellbender frame blocked the USB connector on the LUX flight controller. This was an easy fix! I happen to have red standoffs with a narrow fluted shape. The red standoffs gave just enough clearance for me to plugin the USB connector so I can programme the flight controller.
It’s been a year in development, now a reality. QuadCopter Coach is live! I’ll teach you how to build a FPV drone (quadcopter). So don’t buy a drone, build one. Have fun with us. You’ll probably make friends along the way, and learn something new too!
I’ve combined all my internet, and video skills with my passion for the drone (quadcopter) hobby. Finally there is a place to Learn how to build a FPV Drone in about a day, with my…
No experience necessary.
This is the Beginners Drone Building Course. Where students are transformed from a newbie to an experienced drone builder and pilot. I really want everyone to enjoy the fastest growing sport on the planet. Building or flying, Racing or freestyle. Drones are ton of fun!

Life has been quite sad for me lately. My Mom passed a few days before Thanksgiving. Dad got something like “aggressive Alzheimer’s disease” at the same time. I was his full-time caregiver for 3-weeks. We placed Dad into a fine assisted facility to support him.
It’s almost New Years 2018 as I’m becoming use to my new normal. Your promised videos and more training stuff will be posted soon. I have so many things to give you. Please stay tuned.
Thanks for your patents… Joel LikeCatcher
The daily “Streamer Fun Fly,” AKA demolition derby, are the best part of Flite Fest. A great way to reduce the number of planes you can bring home.
What an incredible experience. 2 sessions. Sharing virtual FPV drone flight experiences, 1 kid at a time. The QuadCopter Coach table was mobbed with 20-30 kids all day long.
Every STEM student I got to operate the remote control radio with FPV goggles over their eyes. As they raised the control sticks the drone (without propellers on for safety) the motors whorled louder. I flew the drone in my hand to give the STEM student a taste of what flying a First Person View (FPV) quadcopter feels like.
Many school teachers and principals asked me about how QuadCopter Coach could bring this education into their classrooms too! I let them know I was open to tailor our online course to best fit within their school budget.
I hope, inside school or at home, every student enrolls in my Beginners guide to building a drone course. Learning electronics, robotics, and programming the fun way!
