Joel LikeCatcher volunteered his time to give the kids and teachers “The FPV Experience” at his booth.
The Air Expo was a FREE family fun day at the Airport on April 21th. Miami is an international hub for aviation. The South Florida Air Expo showcases all of the businesses and exciting opportunities flying into and out of our area everyday. Visitors came to see the planes, simulators, and displays. Briefings are conducted by pilots, aviation enthusiasts, air traffic controllers, flight schools, technicians and other members of the aviation industry.
The expo, the camps and the academies are all part of a SAFEE’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) outreach programs coordinated by the FAA, Miami-Dade and Broward Schools, colleges, universities and local aviation and aerospace industries and organizations. SAFEE’s goal is to introduce as many youth, young adults, and members of our community to the huge impact that aviation has in South Florida.
What an incredible experience. 2 sessions. Sharing virtual FPV drone flight experiences, 1 kid at a time. The QuadCopter Coach table was mobbed with 20-30 kids all day long.
Every STEM student I got to operate the remote control radio with FPV goggles over their eyes. As they raised the control sticks the drone (without propellers on for safety) the motors whorled louder. I flew the drone in my hand to give the STEM student a taste of what flying a First Person View (FPV) quadcopter feels like.
Many school teachers and principals asked me about how QuadCopter Coach could bring this education into their classrooms too! I let them know I was open to tailor our online course to best fit within their school budget.
I hope, inside school or at home, every student enrolls in my Beginners guide to building a drone course. Learning electronics, robotics, and programming the fun way!
